I wonder if the MPAA people realize that this rule makes Disney's Snow White an "R" rated movie because at least one of the main characters (read: dwarves) smokes a pipe...
I personally am not convinced that kids start smoking at an early age because they saw some movie character do so and they thought it looked cool. Most people that started smoking did so because they had friends who smoked, and they wanted to be cool like their friends, so they started.
In case you haven't guessed, I think this is a terribly stupid idea that could only have been suggested by the fervent anti-smoking zealots. When you think of all of the language and violence that moviemakers are able to sneak into a PG-13 movie nowadays, and then suggest that if a main character puffs on a cigarette (i.e. "glamorizes smoking") that it suddenly makes that movie unviewable for that teenager, it is absolutely, positively insane.

It's a shame that some people are influenced by what they see on the screen. I can't believe that anyone still wants to smoke after all that's been said and the damage proven. The only way that "stars" get away with many of the things they do is because so many people follow what they do and do what they do. What about that Paris? She should go to jail just like I would. She even thinks that she deserves special treatment because she is in the public eye and is better than everyone else. If she didn't influence people, she wouldn't even think she could get away with it.

I don't think it would prevent kids from smoking at all. I've been to R movies where I KNOW some of the kids in there aren't even close to being 17 y/o. If a kid wants to smoke, he's gonna smoke, regardless of seeing someone else doing it in a movie.

Absurd. I think it's a violation of freedom of speech. I understand smoking is dangerous but I think it's ridiculous to rate a movie R just because of smoking.

i think of they could carry on with this to video clips that are made now and bypass forward. Cigarette businesses sponsor particular video clips to aim infants and youths. they provide a great number of money to have their "product placed" interior the movie. If the movie is rated bigger the movie could have much less of an aim industry and unfastened movie on that time. i think of they're attempting to point the enjoying field and eliminate the financial benefit. although to value the flicks from the previous in this manner could be stupid, that's judging history by the cultural norms of on the instant. sometime our youngster's infants would be rolling their eyes at our previous suggestions and ideology. issues exchange.

it can. I seriously think that this is an okay idea. but only if the movie has some other sort of thing in it. Smoking is very bad for your health. and lights don't help at all. they're supposed to help beacause theres a vent on the cigarette. but they put the vent right where you put your finger!!! isn't that horrible???

Getting a little over done. I remember when a movie was rated R, you were going to see some T or A. Now, your lucky to see an elbow.
