One thing not mentioned: do you keep your windows open when you use the fan or are you running AC?

If your windows are open : pull the air up into the room from outside. Particularly on the shady side of the house or apt.

If you are running AC with the fan, then as mentioned above you push or pull the air depending if you like the breeze hitting you. The key when AC is running is to circulate air better.

They should blow downward in the summer unless you sit or lie directly beneath them and are too cold. In that case have them blow upward.

The real question is why you use them in the winter. Leave them off and save the power unless you find that you need them to distribute the heat.

Finally, if you have a second-floor loft overlooking your first floor, and a ceiling fan over the first floor, definitely blow the fan upward in the summer to bring cool air to your loft. Works like a charm.

My wife and I differ on this. I prefer to have air blown on me when I am hot. My wife prefers to have the cool air close to the floor, circulated up to the hotter area near the ceiling. Most fan instructions will tell you to have the fan blowing down in the summer and up in the winter.

I dont think it will make a huge difference as far as temperature and think it is only whether you like having wind blown on you or indirectly around you

straight out of my book from school:

Major manufactures of ceiling-suspended fans recommend directing the air downward, counter clockwise, in the summer and upward, clockwise in the winter. Some people like air blowing on them, others do not. Upward or downward, the key is to get the stratified air moving. Try different speeds and direction, and do whatever feels best.

The common convention is to have them blow down (normal) in summer and up (reverse) in winter.
