Well, rabbits do eat a certain amount of dirt in the wild as they eat grass and veg, so behaviour-wise I don't think you have much to worry about.

So long as your bunny is on a complete diet - hay (75% of diet), proper rabbit pellets and appropriate veg, you shouldn't have anything to worry about nutrition-wise.

The only thing you would have to worry about is your rabbit picking up illnesses from outside. Outside rabbits need to be vaccinated against myxomatosis and VHD (viral haemorrhagic disease). Both of these are fairly common and fatal.

Few people seem to know that rabbits need to be wormed to protect against the parasite e. cuniculi - this is a parasite pretty much exclusive to rabbits that attacks the brain, causing a characteristic head tilt. This parasite can live in dirt, so I would certainly recommend picking up some Panacur for Rabbits from your vet if your bunny is poking around in dirt!

The bunny needs nutrients that are in the dirt. Some dogs that are on poor diets eat grass as a way to supplement some nutrition into their diet.

if i saw a rabbit eating or digging in the dirt in the forest i would not be surprised about it but something about rabbits that did surprise me is that they will eat their own little poop balls because they dont get all the nutrition the first time so you might see that one soon. =)

not entirely sure about it. but when people (usually pregnant females) get cravings for dirt, its due to a low iron level.

or rabbits just think dirt is tasty.. cellulose in the soil maybe?

If he's eating it it must taste good. Are you sure hes eating it? Does he have food? He might just like the taste. :P
