The American Quarter Horse, The Paint horse and the Appaloosa are all American breeds that are considered "stock" breeds that were originally used for ranch work. They tend to have level heads and are not, generally speaking, spooky. They are usually of a calm disposition and are almost always "easy keepers" Of course there are exceptions but I've only owned quarter horses or quarter horse cross and they've all been super horses. I boarded an appaloosa mare for a year and she was also a wonderful horse. I don't know about books to read since I've just learned about the breed by having them. I wouldn't own any other.
