I think it is more of a safety thing than anything else, a way to be absolutely sure you really want to turn it off. By making you go through a few steps, you don't turn it off by accident and lose anything you were working on. As far as turning it off by pushing the start button for five seconds, don't do that. Windows doesn't have time to shut down processes it may be running and you could lose data or corrupt a program or two. It's goofy to have to push start to stop your pc though.

Because Windows is stupid. Windows promotes bad English and confusion.
Ever check the help section? You end up more confused then before you had the question!
You press start to turn off!
When you power down Windows, you always see "Windows is shutting down," this of course is bad English! It should be Windows ARE shutting down!!!!

Well, With Windows XP and such, you can push start, then shut down, or hold your pc on/off button for 5 seconds till it powers off on it's own. This is the way windows works.

If you would like to shut your computer down any other way, it may damage files by messing up the ram during powerdown, much like the damage a power serge would do.

So, windows people, use that shut down button, or hold the pc on off button for 5 seconds or so, and your pc will be **** down safely.
