I know how to sew. I just would like to know an easier way to take in the waist of store bought jeans without taking off the waistband. If I just take in the waist band my machine cant handle that much fabric and it looks tacky too.

Unfortunately, everything you do to the waistband affects the hips. That's why the waistband has to come off, so you can make hip darts, gathers, or trim away material to fit the new waistband. Hobby sewing machines can't handle denim anyway. If you find yourself working with a lot of thick material like that, it might be time to graduate to a pro machine. I recommend the Pfaff Stretch-n-Jeans machine.

A belt (clothing) is an article of clothing worn around the waist to hold pants up or as a fashion accessory.
