Okay, you might want to check out a book by Joseph Roquemore called "History Goes to the Movies" and another by Mark Carnes called "Past Imperfect". Both deal with the issues of historical treatment of the movies. Roquemore looks at a whole bunch of CivilWar movies, and Carnes has in depth looks at Glory and Gone with the Wind and Birth of a Nation
Other films to look into: Cold Mountain, Ride With the Devil, and Gettysburg.
The general sense is that movies often don't do a good job of covering history - they tend to oversimplify history, ignore complexity, distort or even invent characters, and shift around or ignore events to make a film that will appeal to a wide audience. That said, Glory is a very good film, although almost of the main characters are fictional, and there are a few issues of simplification and changes in events. Gone With The Wind does a decent job of showing the life during wartime for women in the South, although it is a really glaringly poor portrayal of how slaves thought and acted.
Cold Mountain is also pretty good for life on the home front and has one key battle scene that is fairly true to history.
Birth of a Nation is fairly impressive given that it was made in 1915 with regards to the battle scenes, but it generally is pro-KKK propaganda outside of that.
hope this helps

If I had to choose which side is better, I would've chosen the actual Civil War. In Hollywood, movies like Gone with the Wind are all about the Civil War era. But we want a movie focusing on THE civil war and on soldiers fighting, not citizens during the Civil War era. Important things to remember could be that the Civil War era was a very, very bad time for all Americans and black people. In the movies, they don't show much of the poorness. The fact is that most "Civil War" movies aren't all about the war. It's about romance or suspense like a Nothern man loving a Southern woman or a secruity on the borders or the North and South.

"Little Women" with susan surrandon acurately portrays womens lives in the civil war era as far as what was happening off the battlefield. its not just the war you should be looking at. the clothing created for the movie is excellent as well as daily life. if you want some better ideas contact your local civilwar reenactment group. those members will know better than anyone what is real and what is movie magic regarding civil war period films. I don't do civil war reenactment but have friends that do

examination balanced with common experience, logic, close examination, analyze, and scrupulous judgement can yield the certainty of history. the two Voltaire or Napoleaon stated that "history is a lie agreed upon." some human beings say that history is "HIS- tale". there is a lot reality in the two. people do tend to root for the version that enables their particular schedule. watching the Historcal textual content cloth, historic fiction is additionally contemporary in books. working example, the "Louisianna purchase" is a concern the place stolen property is bought. . of direction the ever popular, Columbus stumbled on the "New international", is an occasion of constrained primitive thinking, that lends itself to linear theory methods, that recommend that there grow to be no history interior the recent international merely before the visual charm of Columbus. yet another has to do with the call of the recent international "Ameirca". It allegedly come from the 1st call of the cartographer Amerigo Vespucci. His call grow to be Albierto. there is not any one from that element or earlier that element with the call Amerigo. that's achieveable that the call grow to be taken from some individuals of the countries interior the recent international in whose language usa meant the land of Gold.

Sure... the movie "Gettysburg" is a fairly accurate depiction of the battle....Also the movie "Glory " is a pretty good story about the 54th Mass. , the first "regular" black regiment in the U.S. Army... "Gods and Generals" is a pretty accurate insight to the war life of Stonewall Jackson, and although Stephen Lang played a great Jackson...the plot does get a little sugary at times
