Most edible mushrooms can be found in stores, except I know of two species of wild mushrooms that are edible, which are Morels [mor-EL], which are brown, about 3-5" high, and the tall cap is covered with several vertical wavy ridges, and grow in shady areas of forests and areas that have been burned out. You can often find them near the bases of trees. They are quite delicious and worth a lot of money if you can get many of them. They grow sporadically, so harvesting them is time-consuming.
There are also Corals, which often grow in the same areas as Morels. They are named because they look like a big yellow coral like you might find on a coral reef. They grow on the forest floor sporadically also, and can range from small to very large. The bigger ones taste woody, so your best bet is to go with ones that are smaller or medium-sized.
You can take both of these species home and fill a sink or bucket with saltwater and let the mushrooms soak in it overnight. This will kill or drive out the bugs and stuff. Then rinse them out thoroughly. With the Morels, you can just saute them in a skillet as they are. They will taste great!
The Corals, however, need to be trimmed down, removing the "broccoli-like" outer layer, leaving the larger stems. Wash them thoroughly also and cook them just like the Morels.

You do know that mushrooms, ugh, are fungus.
Berries sound good as do the hot peppers. Good luck.
