you go in, they give you some really good drugs and I mean good=), next thing you know you'r asking for something to drink, eat and for the nurse not to let the hubby have the credit card...did I mention how good the drugs were? I walked out...no wheelchair...and my husband took me to lunch. There was some discomfort. Had to walk slowly and slightly bent over but recovery time was pretty short. Spent a couple of days laying around the house and back to cleaning house a few days later ... Not a biggie at all. Since then the only difference is that my periods are much heavier than they used to be.

If you are having a vasginal delivery and the tubal ligation done laproscopically, your recovery time will be about 2 weeks with pain for a few days to a week. You will have several very small incisions on your lower tummy. You will need to limit lifting to 7-10 pounds for 2 weeks also. If you have a c-section and are having the tubal ligation done then, your recovery time will be 6 weeks.

I have 3 kids, 2 of which were C sections, one of which was a Csection delivery plus immediate tubal ligation, bilaterally. I had an equal amt of pain and recovery for both Csections. In other words, I had little to no additional pain with my tubal than the other delivery in which the only other surgical procedure was the Csection.
Now, if you are going to have the tubal without a Csection surgical sterilization is easier with less risk of complications and less pain on a man than on a woman. I know this due to my experience in public health clinics.

I did it after 4 children, at 32.
They tell you you will be on your feet the same day, HA! Only if someone lifts you to them, then it is fine to shuffle about. Since you will have just given birth, and will need to pee every couple minutes for a few days... LOL have a human crane on hand.
In real life, you will begin to feel like all other people who just gave birth at about 4 days... By then you will feel like you gave birth 4 days ago ;) You have been there and done that, so you know how it goes for you.
Be aware that you must consent to sterilization at least 30 days before the procedure, so if you plan to do it, get your papers on file. Having your child a little earlier than expected,.. then having to come back and get your tubes tied later, just because your paper is not 30 days old yet, is expensive and annoying.

I had a tubal after my 3rd and final. It is a little painful, but you get over it quickly the more you walk and stay active. Breast feeding really helps too! No joke.
Now for the bad news. There is a link between having a tubal and breast and cervical cancer. My doctor told me about this when I had my cancer surgery. He said it is not being talked about yet, because of the newness of the testing. He said the study should be out in the year. I am anxious to see the outcome of the results!
It's always something! Good luck. Nana

I'm 30, having my second child in Sept, and decided the same thing as you. When I spoke to my doctor he said they would do it 4 weeks after I give birth (assuming a c-section isn't needed, if so it would be done at the same time). It's a 15 min procedure and I could go home an hour later.
I hope this helps. :)

I don't have kids, but I did have a tubal about 10 years ago. It's an outpatient procedure and you usually leave after a few hours. They make two small incisions, which leave tiny scars (if any). I was sore for several days and it took about two weeks to recover fully, but it was the best decision I ever made.
Good luck!

Hey prettymama, yes I have had a tubal ligation in 2000 and it was day surgery. It was keyhole surgery. There are no scars as there was only one stitch in the naval and one stitch in the pubic area. I've never been happier. Good Luck with your decision.

wish I could help, had my tubes tied right after my c-section, so the recovery was overshadowed by the c-section recovery. I've heard that there are new procedures in which the incisions are tiny and recovery is about a weekend???

my friend was gonna have her tubes tied after she had her 2nd baby in march. They doctor told them there was a 60% chance it is a boy. well it turned out to be a girl. even before she had the baby she changed her mind, that she wanted to try for that boy.
but i agree with what others are saying your in your late 20's what if you and your husband decide 3 years from now you want another baby, or what if you break up you meet someone new who wants kids of his own? id just stick to birth control or have your husband/bf have a vasectomy
