There are some good suggestions here already. I especially like House.
However, I strongly suggest Friday Night Lights. At first, I was turned off by the idea, as I did not want to watch a show about football. But honestly, it is much more than that, and although football is what the show is built around, it figures into the plot much less than I would imagine. Kyle Chandler (Coach Taylor) and Connie Britton (Mrs. Coach Taylor :) play the most realistic married couple on television. The characters are engaging, and although you still have the TV ideal of everyone being really good looking, it is believable. Plus, Friday Night Lights won the Peabody Award! (Very prestigious award!)
The show just finished the first season, but it will be replayed this summer. Word leaked yesterday that the show would be back for a full second season this fall.
So give it a try! I believe it is one of the best programs on television today.

It depends on what day/night you are looking for, and what genre. I like House, M.D., for a drama. But I also enjoy comedies like Earl, Two and a Half Men, and game shows like Deal or No Deal, 1 v 100, and some others.

Depend which type of series you like. For medical drama,
I suggest House MD, because you can learn many thing from
the show. For crime drama, I suggest you to watch CSI Vegas/ Miami/ NY. If you love mathematics, Numb3rs is suitable for you. If you love science fiction drama, you can
watch Lost or Supernatural.
