#1 Bad valve guides
#2 Bad piston rings

Valve guides can be fairly easy to replace, piston rings require a rebuild of the whole engine.

There's three things that can be wrong.

1. Leaks - pretty easy to spot, and the cure is to replace the gasket.

2. Bad valve stem seals. Requires a couple hours' labor (for a mechanic) to fix. A common tip-off is if you get a lot of blue smoke when the car starts up.

3. Worn piston rings. These are the most expensive to fix, requiring an engine rebuild. A common tip-off for this are if it blows blue smoke under hard acceleration.

4. Bad PCV system. Not a hard fix, and often you can have the PCV system burn oil if you've equipped a car with cheap chrome valve covers because they are missing the baffles that keep oil from getting sucked into the intake. A pretty cheap fix.

I wouldn't trust any repair in a can - at best, these might get another few thousand miles out of an engine before you scrap it. I've heard too many horror stories about those causing trouble. Remember, if it can keep oil from leaking into places it shouldn't be, it can also keep oil from flowing into places where it should be.

If you are leaving a trail of smoke from the exhaust, It is occuring because some previous owner of the car failed to change the oil or to keep enough oil in the crankcase to get adaquate lubrication. This causes excessive wear on the piston rings and the oil leaks into the cylinders where it is burned up with the gasoline.. You may need new piston rings. That is expensive.

PISTON RINGS, WILL LET THE OIL GO TO PISTON CHAMBER AND GET BURN,,,,,,THAT WAY YOU WILL LOSE OIL..........(IF IT BURNS U SHOULD HAVE BLUESMOKE(WHITE) COMING OUT OF YOUR EXHAUST )

OR YOUR CAR AS GOT SOME OIL LEEKS ,,,,(STEAM WASH YOUR ENGINE SO U CAN SEE ANY LEEKS CLEARLY)
