One of my teachers sent out an email that said "Your grade is determined by the virtue of how you did in hws/projects/exams."

Does "virtue" possibly mean that if I had all A's on everything except the final then I could get an A in the class? I had like a 99 in the class before the final, which I probably bombed because I underestimated it.

Thanks!

It just means that your teacher is basing your grade on how well you did on homework, projects and exams. It implies nothing else. You could conceivably still get an A in the class, but that would depend on how your homework, projects and exams are weighted and upon your average in each of them. For example, if the sum of the weights of these three factors is 80% of your grade, and you had an average of 99% for all three of them, then your grade without the exam is (0.80)(0.99) = 0.792 or 79.2%. So even if you made a 0 on the exam, you could still make a high C or even a B if your teacher factors in class participation for borderline cases. To make an A you would still need 10.8 more points. So we can use the following inequality to find out what minimum score you will need to make your A:

0.20 x ≥ 0.108
x ≥ (0.108) / (0.20)
x ≥ 0.54

A minimum grade of 54% would be needed on the final exam to pull an A based on the preceding scenario. However, I must stress that this is dependent upon your actual average on those three factors (homework, projects and exams) and how they are actually weighted. If it is really slightly lower than 99%,and still weighted at 80%, then even a 54 on your final may not be enough to save your A. Suppose your average is actually 95%. Then you need a 70% on the final to pull an A out of the course. And if the weight for them is only 75%, then a whole new world of possibilities is opened.

Here's a formula to figure your final course grade:

(%wt) = % weight
(%avg) = % average

Final Grade = Homework:(%wt)(%avg) + Projects:(%wt)(%avg) + Exams:(%wt)(%avg) + Final Exam:(%wt)(%score)

Don't stress too much over this. Unless you performed truly abysmally on the exam, you still have a good shot at pulling a decent grade out of the course. Even a C is not bad. Good luck with your course. You can e-mail me through Yahoo! Answers to let me know how things turned out if you'd like. I enjoy hearing from other Yahoo! Answers users.
