1) A greenhouse has a glass or other transparent roof which lets in light and retains the warmth generated by the impinging of light on the contents. The greenhouse effect is a theory that likens our atmosphere to this type of structure because certain gases absorb or reflect infrared radiation. The first reference below shows the attenuation of solar radiation due to reflection and absorption. The attenuation to radiation emitted by the Earth is much more pronounced in the infrared regions due to the much lower temperature of the Earth when compared to the Sun.

There are 2 gases that represents 90% of the green house gas . First is CO2 and represents nothing as plants and photosynthesis take care of it. The plants need CO2 as much as u need oxygen. CO2 is very heavy .
Second is methane . Methane is a very light gas and goes very high in our atmosphere . At that altitude the sun light is so intense that it oxidizes the gas .
