Libertarians are liberals in a conservative disguise. Socially they are liberal, fiscally they are supposedly conservative. But, what many Libertarians fail to understand is that their social agenda conflicts with their fiscal conservatism. Therefore, you get a mixed message that doesn't jive with most of America.
For example. If you legalize drugs (as the Libertarians declare) and then you place half of our nation in a drug-induced welfare state. If you legalize drugs you create more government bureacracy to regulate it just like alcohol, tobacco, and firearms. More government creates more taxes. Sounds very liberal to me. Sorry, I'll stick with being a Reagan Republican.

In spite of the common root word, there is little reseblance between the American idea of 'liberal,' and the ideals of the Libertarian party.
Libertarians believe in the Constitution. They're fiercely capitalist, want personal freedom and personal responsibility, and insist on small government with limitted powers.
While Libertarians might side with leftists on some ideas, like the decriminalization of many drugs, or the implied right to privacy, they do so only when the leftists take the unusual (for them) position of supporting the rights of the individual, rather than pushing more and more restrictive laws.
Similarly, even though Libertarians are often considered 'consevative,' or radically right-wing, they are not. The right/left dichotomy doesn't describe Libertarians. Rather Libertarianism exists on a continuum, very simply, with smaller government and greater personal freedom on one side, and omnipotent government and absolute subjugation on the other. On that continuum, Libertarians are on one side, with only Anarchists closer to the extreme, while Democrats and Republicans, both, are closer to the other side, with Fascists and Communists beyong them.

I'm a Libertarian and I can say we Libertarians don't consider ourselves conservative or liberals. We are just the party of principle. Our motto is "fiscally responsible, socially tolerant" because we are kind of social liberal and fiscally conservative. Clinton was very fiscally conservative and gave us the biggest surplus in history.

Libertarians believe in personal sovereignty. in other words, if you want to do something, and it causes harm to nobody else, you should be free to do so. they do tend to go a little too far tho. I knew one who didn't think he should be taxed for things like body removal when someone dies. refused to address the health issues, just don't tax him

They are really neo-conservatives. They don't support gun control, they don't support laws, they don't support public schools, and they don't support government funded programs like health care. The only good thing about them is that they don't jam stupid things down your throat like cons. They don't jam gay marriage or stem cell research down your throat, and they stay out of your lives.

Libertarians believe in the non-aggression principle.
No one has the right to initiate physical violence, or the threat of physical violence against other people or their property.
