You can either take him to a safe area, or you can just let him be. He/She will leave when it wants too. Where I live they show up all the time when large rains come through, but if he was trying to get somewhere and you move it, he'll just end back up there eventually. Turtles are very stubborn.

Well all turtles have tails, I live in La. I have 8 box turtles that are mature and 1 hatchling from last years eggs. As long as it is not in the water its risk of drowning is not possible. Would you like ot keep as a pet? Turtles are wonderful pets and can be very spoiled. My advice would be please get a hold of me and lets talkl turtles, I will be glad to help you figure out if it is a soft shell or a leather back, both require water. you say it does not go in its shell when you are a round it, does it have colors on its head? If so you have a box turrle, they are the best out of the bunch. Please IM me and lets atalk turtles.

the best thing to do it to move it to a safe area in your yard or just outside as long as it is not in someone Else's yard. wherever you put it let your family know so if they mow or do yard work it will not be hurt. you can pick it up with a shovel by setting it in front and pushing or coaxing it onto the shovel so if it is a snapper you won't get hurt. whatever you do do it in his best interest and it is best not to make captive a wild animal. wash your hand with antibacterial soap just in case he may have a little salmonella on him.

Unless it is in danger, it will find its way back. If you feel better, you could move it near a pond.
