Watermelons can be grown vertically, but only the melon that grow to a very small size. there is no way to support a 50lbs. "jubilee", but you can grow a smaller variety. you will still need a sturdy trellis of some type. As the vine grows up the trellis it will bloom and put on small fruit. As the fruit grows it will need supporting so that it doesn't tear the vine from the trellis. The best thing to use is one of the bags that oranges come in. Put the melon in the bag {be sure not to crimp the vine}. Then tie that to the trellis. Hope this helps.

Highly unlikely to say the least. The mass of the gourds or fruit would cause most shelves to fall, and would most definately pull-down most vertical trellices.

If you have a balcony, and can convince the wife to let you do it, you can use the railing as a trellis. You'll just need to build or buy a bed to put the soil in. Oh...just remember to make sure that all of the good stuff grow INSIDE the balcony. Last thing you want to happen is a 2-3 kilo bio-bomb falling on a passer-by.

Unfortunately, it's a pipe dream. Watermelons and pumpkins take up too much room and need a large space to spread not to mention the weight of the melons and pumpkins. They have strawberry plants that you can grow with your kids and dwarf blueberry bushes. They don't take up that much room and your kids will enjoy the berries that they harvest. You can still have fun by taking the kids to a pumpkin patch before halloween and they can pick one out. Sorry. :o(

i think of all of those could be to heavy for a trellis, because it climbs the fruit could cling off and doubtless pull loose. they desire help as they are heavy. Trellis could paintings for green beans. if it is in elementary terms for 2 human beings then plant a million or 2 on the main flowers.

Maybe you can find a community garden that you can join. A lot of cities have these. The plants you want to grow need a lot of room.
