I have a very old nickel. One side of it has an Indian head and says Liberty, and the other side has a buffalo and says United States of America, e pluribus unum, and Five Cents. I think there once was a year on the front, but it's been all but rubbed away, and I can just make out a 24 on it. Is this nickel rare? Is it something that coin collectors collect? Just curious. Thanks!

Mirrorcoin is correct here. However, if only the 24 shows, the coin is a very low grade, about good, being tops. It has a little value, but not much. (.25-.50). It is best to just hold onto it and wonder where it has been over the years. You don't get to many of them in change anymore, but every once in a while I salt rolls of nickels with them, as well as Indian head cents in cent rolls. I just wish I could see the expression on someones face when they find them. You have a coin from our past hold onto it for good luck.

The nickel that you describe is a buffalo nickel, which were minted from 1913-1938. They were designed by James E. Fraser. I believe the year on your coin is 1924 which had a mintage of 21,620,000. If your coin is graded good your coin is worth $1.50, if it is graded VG (very good) then it is worth $2.00,If it is graded F (fine) then it is worth $5.00. I hope this information helps

I'm sure the guy before me is right, but I would hold on to it. You never know what it could be worth in the future.
