I totally agree Sandstorm.
But I think that everyone should know how to mend clothes. My dad does a lot of it at my house because he learned it in the military.

This is another one of those life skills that everyone should be taught. Suppose a 30 year old single man was living on his own. Would you expect him to bring his ripped pants back home to mommy? Or would you expect him to pick up a needle and thread and fix them his own damn self?
There is another valid reason why everyone should be taught this important life skill. When I was young, my grandmother taught me how to sew, embroider, knit and crochet. While I haven't retained all of what I learned, I can still pick up any of these tasks and make an effort. Scientists have learned that these kind of manual skills are great for memory and visual dexterity. The repetitiveness stimulates the mind, resulting in greater concentration and the ability to retain more. It's also great stress relief.
These reasons alone are very good reasons why men should learn these tasks. Even in your perfect world where husbands provided for their wives and children, could they benefit from these tasks. Imagine if you will, a man comes home from work. He's had a long, hard day. As is customary, dinner is on the table 30 minutes after he arrives home giving him some time to unwind. He sits down and picks up the mending. As he sews, the routine task calms his nerves and lulls him into an almost meditative state. When dinner is ready, he puts the mending back. He's immediately revived and has a much more pleasant evening with his wife and children. The next day, he has greater concentration at work and is therefore more efficient. How does this sound to you?

I think everyone should know how to mend clothing, or at least know how to sew a button back on clothing. It's far to expensive to be throwing out clothes for just a small problem.

Yes I agree with you. It is nice if a woman knows how to mend clothes but it should be up to the woman. I know it makes me feel good if I'm able to sew back together a piece of clothing that is torn.

Yes I agree. Clothes are so expensive now aday and made so poorly they have to be mended before being worn. Every woman should know the basic to mending clothing even if it is by hand like I have to.

Yes, it's a very good thing to know.
We can't afford to throw away every piece of clothing that gets a little rip or tear or a hem that comes out.
I have a sewing machine and really enjoy sewing.

IF you had a girlfriend or wife . . . that speaks volumes.
EVERYONE should know how to do simple mending, just like everyone should know how to pump gas, do some basic cooking, do simple household repairs. These are life skills.

I agree that this would be a great way to save money within the home. I regularly hem and repair my clothing to make it last longer, and it has save me a lot of money over the years.

For once, I kinda agree with you. It is a skill many people, not just women, should have. It is simple enough and saves you money. However, I don't think you should expect it from all the women that you know or meet.
