The best thing to do is to burn all of your data to a CD or DVD.

A website for backing up a lot of data would cost a lot of money.

Definitely use CDs or, if your computer is capable, DVDs. I'd suggest (if you can) running spyware/virus checks. It might clear things up enough that you can still use the computer. Restarting on its own certainly sounds like a virus.

I believe typing "shutdown \a" in CMD will stop the computer from rebooting temporarily, but I'm not 100% on that one.

If your computer is USB compatible you could buy a thumb drive.... there are some that are at least 1 gb and bigger depending on how many files that are on the drive it could be a fast solution and less time consuming with all of those disk.

And some of the drives are as cheap as 20.00 bucks, and you could carry them with you were ever you go.

Or if there is a 2nd computer available with enough space... you could transfer the files to the other computer....depending on hard drive size.

There are some on line back ups, but, that isn't what I would do. I would back all files up to either a memory stick or floppy disks or write them to a CD. Since you are concerned about losing things, first try to restore to an earlier date. Go to Programs, tools and acessories and system tools. Try to restore to an earlier date when you know your computer was working correctly. Good luck.

Easier to buy an external hard drive or backup to CD or DVD first, be warned, reinstalling it incorrectly may end up with one thats even worst then now.

burn them to a cd or dvd (you do have a burner right?)

i recommend deepburner (it's a free third party utility to burn cds and dvds) but windows xp will burn by dragging and dropping into the cdrom device (shown under "My Computer")
