It's illegal for employers to ask you about your ethnicity, your marital status, and whether or not you have children.

If I were asked about any of those things (or anything else that made me uncomfortable), I'd simply respond "My [marital status, race, home life, personal obligation] does not affect my ability to do this job."

OR "I have no personal or medical issues that would negatively impact my ability to do this job."

Just ask the interviewer why he thinks your job performance will be affected by your marital status. That should redirect the discussion pretty quickly, and it doesn't make you look any less professional.

"Sorry, but I prefer not to answer that question." If they press you or ask you why not, you could say, nicely, that you believe they are not permitted to ask them.

They also cannot ask your age, or any question that would indicate your age.
They cannot ask about your citizenship, national origin, religion, gender, marital status, anything about your education not pertinent to the job, anything about membership in an organization not pertinent to the job, anything about child care or ages of children, anything about your credit rating, personal plans about staying in the area, or anything not job-related.

They are not only inappropriate, they are prohibited.

No one is going to ask you these questions.

They probably won't come right out and ask you point blank but figure out other questions that will give them those answers.

Tell us the story of yourself.... ta da, out comes the history and the facts they really want to know.
