it is true they both are jerks of the field. But on the Field Ty Cobb played hard, and what he was naturaly played what he thought was the right way. while barry bonds cheated the game by artificialy making himself a great home run hitter.

I agree that both are jerks. Both are very selfish and treat those around them with contempt. The difference is the respect, admiration, and loyalty that Cobb had to the game. He understood that the game was what mattered, not who was playing it. Bonds has no respect for any aspect of the game.

And for the record - the only thing that has changed about the size of ball fields from the beginning of the modern era (1903 to now is how far back the outfield fences are. All other dimensions are the same now as they were then and I believe that in his prime, Cobb would still be hitting .370 against todays pitchers.

Barry Bonds being a jerk: won't sign an autograph.

Ty Cobb being a jerk: beating a man to death with his bare hands.

Neither are good guys, but Ty Cobb was a maniac. Speaking of cheating, here's something found on wikipedia:

"..Cobb finally called it quits from a 22-year career as a Tiger in November 1926 by announcing his retirement. Shortly thereafter, Tris Speaker also retired as player-manager of the Cleveland team. The retirement of two great players at the same time sparked some interest, and it turned out that the two were coerced into retirement because of allegations of game-fixing brought about by Dutch Leonard, a former pitcher for Cobb. Leonard accused Wood and Cobb of betting on a Tiger-Cleveland game played in Detroit on September 25, 1919, in which they allegedly coerced a Detroit victory to win the bet. Leonard claimed proof existed in letters written to him by Cobb and Wood.."

Statistically, Ty Cobb is better no question. I just checked his stats. His walk to strikeout ratio? 1,249/357. That is just incredible. Besides home runs, Cobb beats Bonds in every category.

Easy. "Ty Cobb was no Barry Bonds." Or the other way. Doesn't matter.

Compare them as players? Yes. It can be done, either trivially or in interesting, advanced ways that require real analysis, critical thinking, and reveals insights perhaps not expected. But this isn't what is really wanted here; just keep drinking the "hate Bonds" kool-aide.

I say Hell no!
As big of a b*st*rd as Barry is, he doesn't even come close to Cobb. They say if you're not cheating, you're not trying. Well, I guess since Barry is cheating, at least he is trying. But Cobb actually killed a guy!

If Ty cobb had played in the modern era than perhaps you could make a comparison, but reagardless the game has changed allot. Also how can you say that alcohol at the time was not performance enhancing. Moonshine packs quite a punch I tell ya.
