When Congress created the Postal Service to replace the Post Office Departmant back in 1970 written into the law was the stipulation that the USPS was not allowed to make a profit or lose money. Therefore postage prices must be priced at an price where the USPS should be about on the even keel.
The major reason for price incresases is the cost of fuel.
The USPS has also had to pay retirement costs for postal workers, that was accrued by those workers when they were in the military, instead of the military paying those parts of the pensions. That has run into the billions of dollars, causing the USPS major financial challenges.

They've actually come out with something now called a "Forever Stamp". That means once you buy the stamp, it is good to use forever, no matter how many times the price goes up since you bought it. I think it's a great idea and about time, too.

lol, i guess they think if they do it gradually that we wont notice
but thats not the point here. they are trying to raise money to defeat the manatee forces that are rising up. all will be sorry if they dont join the ranks now.
