CNN says the U.S. divorce rate is the lowest since 1980.

Is it because fewer people are getting married or people are working harder to make their marriage work?

Yes, more and more people don't bother getting married. They'd rather shack up. Shackups seldom make it to the altar, even if they get engaged. Such a shame. Those who shack up because for whatever reason they don't want to get married also have no right to complain when the states don't recognize them as married, like should one of them die, the other, since they didn't want to get married, has no legal right to any money left behind, and rightfully so. Since they don't want to become legal family, they have no say in what happens to the other person should they ever need a legal representative, and rightfully so since they didn't want to become a legal family. Those who shack up shouldn't get the benefits of those who actually go all the way and make their union a legal and binding union. As far as those men who run from responsibility of their illegitimate kids, if women would quit having premarital sex, this wouldn't be a problem.

Fewer people are getting married but choosing to live together as man and wife without the legal document.
Some states in the 40 pct rate now of couples who reside together as man and wife without the benefit of a legal marriage certificate.

I don't quite know what the statistics say about how many people per year are getting married, but I could make an educated guess on this: here goes: More independent and educated women don't necessarily need to rely on marriage and committment anymore. Look at shows like sex in the city.....they're doing it for themselves and they don't need the rings to get in the way. I'd say less people are tying the knot. Also, when you look at the number of bastard children in the world- you also see how many men RUN from not only their responsibilites as a husband/provider, but unfortunately as a father to their own children. PATHETIC.

Because most of the people getting married now come from divorced homes, therefore are affarid of getting married and just dont believe in marriage. Cohabiting is available, so why get married, the question is what affect will it have on the children of these couples.

Wouldn't it be nice if it were due to people working harder to make their marriages work?

Sadly, it's due to fewer marriages, people are also waiting longer to marry. Here's an article on aol I found...

Yahoo says it's the lowest since 1970 and it's mostly because people are choosing to co-habitate instead of live together and that by doing this, it doesn't exactly equal a healthier lifestyle.

If you HAVE the article, why aren't you reading it?

It's because fewer people are choosing to get married. They would rather live together unmarried..
