get the extension downloadhelper and when you are in youtube click on the dowloadhelper and name the file and at the end put .flv. Putting .flv is important if not you can't do it That goes after the name of the file. Get an FLV Player and the Replay Converter and that would convert the files to another format. Go here to get the flv player from dowload.com and a converter get Any Video Converter http://www.any-video-converter.com/products/for_video_free/

There are a number of sites that can convert the .flv (flash video) files that YouTube operates in to any other type that you can play on your computer such as: .avi, .wmv, mpg etc. You can download these, store and watch via Mediaplayer or whatever your system is and burn them.
Apart from the sites mentioned in another answer above, these are two other sites that can convert the YouTube files:

You can not download the videos. You can watch them for free. its a free site.

If you still want to achieve downloading then there are other ways of saving what you see and I am not sure I should explain the process involved in this as it lurks in the wrong side of copyright area.

Here is what "You Tube" say about Downloading the videos

Can I download videos to watch later?

No, currently you can't download our videos to your computer. YouTube's video player is designed to be used within your browser as an Internet experience. As an alternative to downloading, you can temporarily save videos to watch later by adding them to your QuickList. If you'd like to save them more permanently, login and click "Save to Favorites" under the videos you'd like to keep.

Yes it's free and you can watch it and there are techniques for "ripping" the videos from it. But why would you want to rip them? They're usually low quality videos that are good to be streamed over the internet.

It is free. You can only watch, not download.
