When the problem happens.
Basically you say it you'll understand what I mean when the *** hits the fan.

Think about it. You are facing a fan. You throw pudding into it. What happens to the pudding -- it goes everywhere and hits you in the face. It means when everything goes wrong or something turns bad. Sometimes it is used to mean when someone finds out they've been mislead.

The connotation is that when it hits the fan, it's going to hit everyone that hasn't found a good place to hide.

People generally say it after they've found their own place to hide, to call attention to the fact that the person they are saying it to seems to be standing right in front of the fan.

it means that at that point, what was bad to begin with will become a problem for a lot of people (or alot of people will get mad).
example "when I told my mom i was fired, the **** hit the fan"
meaning, my mom got really upset at me for getting fired.

example "You didnt get your homework done, just wait till the **** hits the fan"
meaning, you think its bad now, just wait till your teacher finds out

Just imagine the reaction of people if you litterally took a lump of **** and threw it into a fan in a crowded room. You would upset anyone who was affected.

Probably because s*** hitting a running fan would make a big mess and that's what it means, to have a big mess on your hands.
