It won’t hurt him if he puts his hair with oil in his mouth, he won’t get to eat allot of it that way, but baby oil can be dangerous if it is aspirated. Baby oil is usually left in locations where children can access it, it usually does not have a childproof cap on it AND if a child ingests it, it can easily get into their lungs. The oil completely coats the interior of the lungs not allowing air to pass through. There is nothing that EMT's or doctors can do and the child will eventually suffocate to death or develop deadly pneumonia. There are not that many cases each year bout it, but it does happen.
I have used baby oil for cradle cap and it worked after two trials. After you put it on brush the hair with a fine tooth comb against the direction of the hair growth. Wash it off as soon as you can, your baby does not need to sleep with it.
To stop him from pulling on oiled hair you can try putting mittens on, give him toys to play with, let him watch a baby show or distract in other ways. You can also play patty-cakes after you put it on so that he forgets he has it.

I dont think that your son will drown from oil on his hand put to his mouth. I have never seen or heard of any cases like that.
I can tell you that straight cocoa butter works much btter on cradle cap, cleared my daughters up in a matter of days, and she doesnt get it anymore, she is now 5 months old.
And cocoa butter will not harm your child in any way, even if he ate it :) hehe, which young babies do put everything to their mouth.
Make sure it is straight cocoa butter, and the best thing is it is cheaper than baby oil in most cases.
Cheaper, and works better, what more can you ask for.
Good luck!

I don't know anything about the drowning, but I can tell you that I tried the oil for my girl's cradle cap and it didn't help at all! It just made her hair look greasy and nasty. Save yourself the grief and mess and try another solution.

People have been using baby oil for year and if it was that dangerous they would have done a serious recall and put it in every parenting book (like they did with all of the warnings about baby powder). Don't worry!

i don't know if one drop will kill him, but just be careful. Put the oil on a cloth before you apply it to his hair, less likely to drip that way.
