i was going to try and get to New York and get a train once i got off the plane. My friend says it would be better to go to newark, but it's cheaper for me to go to JFK. Therefore i was wondering how close the train stations are to the airport. I am a dreadful traveller and need things to be easy.
Also i was wondering if i could book a ticket for the train in advance, and about how much it would be. Can anyone help ? please

Why not fly into Philly?

Train transportation in the United States is not as good as it is in Europe. From JFK you would need to go to Penn Station in downtown New York. The distance is 19 miles, and this could be by taxi for about $45.00 or take the "New York Airport Service" bus to Penn Station for about $14.00. The website www.shadovitz.com/nyctransport will give you other options.

At Penn Station you would ride an "Amtrak" train named either "The Pennsylvanian" or The Keystone" from NYC to Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, the nearest station to Hershey. There are 9 departures daily, and the fare is $45.00 each way. Yes you can reserve on line at "www.amtrak.com".

Again you would probably need to travel by taxi to Hershey, a distance of 14 miles,. If you are staying at a hotel, most have a shuttle that will pick you up. or perhaps simply someone from the wedding party could come pick you up.

Welcome to the United States, and have a great time at the wedding.

First of all, Philadelphia is a LOT closer to where you are going. I don't know Philadelphia well enough to advise, but I do know there is a SEPTA (commuter) train link between airport and the main station.

Next, Newark is a LOT easier - you just take the monorail right to the train station. Amtrak trains stops several times a day, or for a few dollars you can take New Jersey Transit to a more frequent stop (preferably Metropark; often the first or second stop for Amtrak heading southwest out of NYC to Philadelphia; some trains godirectly to Harrisburg, and others would make you change in Philadelphia).

How much cheaper is JFK? If it's less than $75 difference, Newark definitely makes more sense. Getting from JFK to NY's Penn Station will cost you a bundle by taxi, at least $20 (probably more) by direct bus, OR a comparable amount by express trains (Skytrain to Jamaica Station and Long Island Railroad to Penn). The fare differences from NYC to Harrisburg vs. Newark Airport to Harrisburg are probably about $10-20 on Amtrak as well.

I'll tell you the cheapest way from JFK to NYC's Penn Station: take Skytrain toward the Howard Beach subway station, but Gget off the stop before (one of the long-term parking lots) and walk across the long lot (the 2nd-to-last stop is free; it costs $5 to get off at Howard Beach). Take the A train to 34th St; that's the west end of Penn Station ($2 subway fare; about an hour). If crowded, Penn can be a mess to find your way around, but Amtrak (if memory serves) is toward the western end (along with New Jersey Transit; stay away from the Long Island Railroad side). If you are a dreadful traveler as you say, cost is not on your side here; easy = expensive. THAT's why I recommend Newark.

If you want to book a train in advance, try amtrak.com.

good luck, and enjoy the wedding! I hope you get to see something on your own as well.

I used to take a Continental commuter flight from Newark Liberty Airport to Harrisburg. If they still have that flight and you can fly into Newark, that might be a way to go.

Once you get to Harrisburg Airport you could either take a cab to Hershey or rent a car. Maybe the hotel you are staying in has a shuttle that can pick you up at the airport?

here's the link for train service ......you'll be using AMTRAK from Pennsylvania Station in downtown NYC ( Manhattten Island) to Harrisburg PA.....JFK to Penn Station would be a nightmare to drive or take public transportation for a foreigner ( and by that I mean anyone who doesnt live in New York !!!) a cab from the airport is going to be about $50.00 and take an hour

now, maybe there is a shuttle service or a direct limosene. from the airport to Penn Station.......I'll leave it to you to figure out
