screaming monk is **half** right.

To find the latitude of your "opposite," change north to south (or vice versa) like he said.

Finding the longitude of your "opposite" is a little trickier. Longitude indicates your east/west position relative to zero degrees (the Greenwich meridian). Your opposite will be in that position relative to 180 degrees (opposite from Greenwich). If you are at 80 degrees west as in screamin's example, your opposite is 80 degrees west of the 180 meridan, which is 100 degrees east. The simple way to find it is to change east to west (or vice versa), and subtract the starting number of degrees from 180.

So, for your example ... 17 degrees north, 78 degrees east ... your "opposite" is at:

latitude 17 degrees south (change north to south)
longitude 102 degrees west (change east to west and subtract 78 from 180)

Then check the location on a globe, or someplace online like Google Maps.

I don't think it's permanently inhabited, except by fish. The location is in the South Pacific several hundred miles west of the coast of Peru. :-)

Determine your latitude and longitude and reverse the sign for the latitude of the place opposite you. If you lived at latitude 30 north, the location furthest from you would have a latitude of 30 south. Longitude starts at 0 degrees at the Prime Meridian (PM) and increases to a maximum of 180* west travelling west from the PM. Going east from the PM numbers 'increase' to a maximum of 180* east longitude. The location furthest from you is on the same line of longitude as you are but it is reversed in polarity (east to west or west to east). If you lived at the coordinates 30* north latitude and 80 degrees west longitude, the place furthest from you would be 30* south lat and 80 * east long.

Fint your coordinates. Add 180 to your longitude. Subtract 360, if necessary, to get a number between 0 and 360. The latitude will be the same as yours except in the southern hemisphere(that's assuming you're in the northern hemisphere).

Absolutely not. Both China and the USA are in the northern hemisphere. Therefore it is impossible for China to be opposite of the USA. Apparently you'll end up somewhere in the Indian Ocean. Time to come up for air.
