I have a jersey that my dad won at a charity auction several years ago. He vaguely remembers buying it, but thinks it was a "game worn jersey." It looks authentic, but I want to make sure before I put it on e-bay. Any advise.

My cousin used to work for espn.com and had to investigate the same thing for some of their sales.

The easiest way to tell an actual game used or truly real nhl jersey is the fight strap and the buttons near the crotch part of the jersey where the fight strap attaches. In addition, all teams' equipment managers write a player's name in magic marker on that player's equipment (sticks, pads everything) so they can keep it organized. Or there are printed labels with the players last name on the inside or somewhere out of view.

A picture of your father buying the jersey or at the charity auction may be just as good as a certificate of authenticity.

Whose jersey is it? I honestly don't know. You could still get lots of money for it and by the way, if it's a game worn jersey don't sell it it's very valuable.

Why does it have to be authentic. With drugs and salaries, are the players authentic? I've bought several jerseys for $40, and they look great!

a good sports appraisal is probably the way to go

cost you some money...but if you want to sell it on eBay, you'll need a COA (certificate of authenticity)
if you don't have a COA....you won't make nearly the money you could
