Stanley Clarke has that category sewed up. Here is his website as proof. http://www.stanleyclarke.com/frontpage.htm
The other two you mentioned are average compared to the master.

Les is excellent, as is flea, but Clif Burton, former Metallica bassist was unreal. Other good ones are Stu Hamm and Stanley Clarke.

Les claypool instantly came to mind, but after thinking about it I have to go with Tim Commerford of Rage against the Machine...the stuff he does with the Bas Guitar is illmatic...

Although I know there is no such thing as ‘the’ best in any human endeavor (and especially art),

I’m with -- Fonzie T – on the Jack Bruce thing -- on the grounds that he not only could: play outrageous riffs, hold the time, and fill the rhythm void in a trio with a lead guitar player and lead drummer – but he could do all of that and sing at the same time. Now, that is freaky.

And, as someone who has copies of Bass Player magazine in every room of his house, I mean no disrespect to anyone else’s choice(s).

Shoot, every name mentioned has been in Bass Player – and I haven’t.

Flea is great; also, Mike Watt (Minutemen/ Firehose), Kim Gordon (Sonic Youth), someone already said Geddy Lee, Mark Ibold (Pavement)
Maybe Dee Dee Ramone should get points for his character; although he's a pretty sucky bass player.
