Is there any way that the sabres could afford to sign both and keep the team under the cap. It is going to be terrible if they let either one go...but I am starting to lean towards Drury if I had to pick one to keep.

I think the only possible way to keep them and remain under the cap would be if a combination of Drury, Briere, and a few other players were to re-work their contracts. It has been done but it is up to the players. If the players bolt out of Buffalo, I would not blame the team. It's the players greed that is the culprit.

As much as I would like to see either player in a Flyers uniform, I would be surprised if both of them weren't signed by the Sabres. There are too many hefty contracts on the team that aren't going to be renewed because of many factors, so don't despair, at least one of them is staying - you can bet on it. And win.

There is a way they can keep both but they won't be able to pay them their market value. Either or both will have to take less then what other teams may offer if they both want to stay in Buffalo. Briere will be going to Montreal ... they have lots of money and room under the cap. Drury will stay ... out of the two of them, Drury has more of the intangables.

On the surface it doesnt seem very likely they can afford both. I would be surprised if they got in a bidding war to keep both...they would have to unload a lot of depth to pay them. Ah...but there may be a silver lining! Depending on how their Cup run finishes up and how each feels about the way it ends (if they win at least one is gone for sure) but if they come Oh so close they might be able to pull off one of those one year deals like the Avalance did a few years ago when they got both Selanne and Kariya to sign one year $1 million deals to make one run at the Cup. Drury understands this, he was part of that team so while it doesnt seem likely it is within the realm of possibilites. Of course the down side to something like that would be that both are even more likely to leave after next season because a lot of teams would recognize the scenario and make cap room, no way they can forego big dollars for more than one year (and for the people who will say they wont risk injury...Selanne and Kariya both got the Aves to buy huge insurance policies just for that reason and these 2 would demand the same). Not a likley scenario given that both can get big contracts but one never knows the drive within to win a Cup!

Yes they could, but they probably won't. Teppo and Zubrus would not be resigned. Also a few larger contracts may have to move such as Max, Connolly, Spacek, Kotalik, Hecht, Kalinin, Tallinder or Lydman. Kalinin and Kotalik's names have been thrown around more than most.

Still, that might not be enough. Due to the regular and post seasons that Drury and Briere are having, the bidding could get ridiculous and that will probably mean that one or both will be gone. The Sabres will probably have to overpay one of them to keep the fans happy and stay competitive. Darcy Regeir is not a big fan of overpaying for anything.

That's a conversation for mid-June though. For now, we've got more important things to worry about. GO SABRES!

i could be only the minority, yet i think of Briere, Drury, and Vanek can come back to the Sabres next season. The earnings cap will upward thrust to approximately $40 seven-40 8 million next season. the greater desirable 2 million could be used to re-sign Drury. Zubrus will probable walk (with Stafford taking his place) and the two Numminen will retire or Spacek will bypass (or the two), which will unlock sufficient money for Briere and Vanek. Nathan Paetsch will fill in finished-time for Numminen or Spacek. perhaps it quite is merely me being naive, yet i think of Drury, Briere, and Vanek will return to Buffalo next season.

I doubt they can keep both but i think Drury will be most likely to stay with the team. All depends on the outcome of the Playoffs. Briere has been rumored to either sign wtih Montreal or Philly (he's best friends with Simon Gagne) but wait and see. I think they'll keep the captain and Vanek.

I don't think so, not without trading some of your other valuable players. Sorry dude, that's today's NHL.
