All universities with medical programs are good. Medical school does not make you a psychiatrist. It just gets you into a medical residency (well, sometimes you don't match, but I digress).

What you're more interested in is what teaching hospital has the best psychiatry residency.

Of course, "best" means different things to different people -- some places have more research money than others, some are in cities with more culture and entertainment, some have better salaries than others, some employ pioneering psychiatrists... you see why there are a lot of variables to consider here?

A good place to start is www.scutwork.com, a review site used by medical students for applying to residencies. You should also talk to some of the psychiatry residents on the www.studentdoctor.net graduate medical education forums.

That being said, it's common knowledge that psychiatry residencies are some of the absolute easiest to get, so it almost doesn't matter where you go to medical school. You certainly don't have to go to Johns Hopkins to get a psychiatry residency... although it helps to go to Johns Hopkins' medical school if you want to get into their psych residency -- you'll likely have rotated through there and made an impression on the residency director who ranks residency applicants.

That helps... doesn't seal the deal, of course, but it helps.

Good luck!

You look at school based on your major at www.princetonreview.com. But I am a Nursing major and I attend Univeristy of Alabama @ Birmingham; which is a very accredited Medical school.
