its a singing competition the best singer should win,if we are leaning towards beauty and personality it becomes "pagenty" then if thats the case might as well change american idol to miss/mr america. We all buy cds because we listen to the good voice of the singer not for the beauty or personality

It is not always about who is the best singer... there has been some really awesome vocalist's that have graced the idol stages but they would not market very well... you have to have some personality to go with those vocals... recording studios can do their magic and fix those flawed vocals... but giving someone a personality is a different thing.

I may be thinking like an engineer but I tend to think in terms of taking the answer to an extreme in order to get to the best solution.

I've seen complex computer software and hardware that had no other purpose than to duplicate the human voice. An (synthetic) opera singer created by this software is completely indistinguishable from a human performer with the exception that the synthetic voice is perfect, consistent, cheap and has no ego. If I were only interested in a CD I would go with the synthetic voice.

American Idol seeks to find a person with PRESENCE that the American people can bond with. From that perspective I think a popularity contest is appropriate.

No it is not a singing competition it is in fact a job interview for a.i inc. They are looking for a singer that that can promote and make lots of money off of. Personality and stage presence are a huge part of the job description . The pop world is full of a lot of very sucessful music stars who are very mediocre -at -best singers. If you need examples just start with Madonna and work your way outwards.
The reason that Jordin wins this thing is that she has the big "IT" that Melinda so sorely lacks. Melinda is a technically competent but boring as all hell singer and so she will lose.

a person does need to sing well but it is not just that.. this person is supposed to be an "American Idol".. there has to be more to the person then just singing...

and some of the most famous singers in the world, actually don't have the best voices, but it is their personality that helps sell the song.....

I think actually that American Idol has helped. Many of those talented singers would probably never get past the receptionist in a conventional road to a recording contract.

Its not a singing competition.
Simon Cowell said in interview that the show was always just about looking for unsigned talent for him to sign to his record label SyCo music.
And for Simon Fuller on the management side.
Its about who will make them the most money.

hey look at the recording industry these days. if it were all about singing then britney spears wouldn't be as successful as she is now. we all know that she can't carry a tune and when she does sing she just lip syncs.
