Last year I hyper-extended my knee whenever I fell while skating. It wasn't too bad, but it sure hurt for about a week and a half, and I didn't have 100% motion. Then about one month later I fell on it again, this time my leg bent, my butt landed on my foot while my knee took the impact to the ground. Hurt like hell for another couple of days. As of late I've been riding my bicycle regularly, I haven't experienced any problems until I started to jog at the nearest track. I've only done 1 mile each time and it was only twice. But now my knee is like it was a year ago. It's ok to move with normal motion, but when I twist my leg it puts a lot of pressure on the outer side. If kneel all the way down it puts a lot of pressure between the femur and tibia. I've scheduled an appointment with an orthopedic surgeon, but it isn't for another two weeks. If the ACL or MCL is damaged, even from last year..... well, I;m freaking out here. Am I ever going to be able to run again?

I had a bad hyper extension about 8 mo. ago too. Wearing a good knee brace really seems to help. Keeps the swelling down and gives you a little more support, especially when running. I haven't had to wear mine for a couple of months now, I think it has finally healed. Running will cause more agravation due to the impact involved at the knee joint, and like you when mine was hurt the bike didn't seem to bother it at all.

Still probably a good idea to have it checked out anyway.

Good Luck!

Here is the brace I used... standed Ace neoprene brace with the reinforcements in the side. You can get them anywhere.

Keep the appointment with the orthopedic surgeon. Wear the brace the other person suggested and be careful until you get the doctor's answer. If you have even a partial tear of the ACL, there is a stability issue. The outer side of the knee is the lateral side, the inner portion is the medial side. The MCL is on the medial side. There are other areas that could be injured, such as patella tendon, lateral ligaments as well as the meniscus. An MRI and possible arthroscopic surgery to repair the damage. Physical Therapy will follow this. Good Luck

your knee does need to be examined. the reason it didn't hurt while riding was because there's no impact on your joint. riding would be good therapy for your legs and your aerobic conditioning. but the caution would be to have your knees examined. cycling brings another factor into the equation - if your pedals and legs are adjusted to bike, you will open yourself up to another set of problems .
- best bet, have your knees examined.
