Davy,

you can actually buy timber kiln dried, and moisture reduced, for example there are loads of turning firms on the net, Craft supplies etc. Drying actually takes along time, a couple of weeks in a timber oven, too fast it twists, so at home is very hard, due to too much temp and moisture change, that is why it costs more. My uncle did loads and would always buy old church pews etc as they were very old etc.

my husband always dries his timber out in the attic of our house as this is a dry warm place hope this helps
