A one day embargo would do nothing, what would work is
to let the Shell/Exxon's of the world know who their customer
is. Don't buy any gas from Shell or Exxon for a period of
30 days, the biggest problem that I see is that the little guy
is the one that gets hurt (the owner) so we could just let them
know that this is coming and allow them time to prepare.
If Shell/Exxon insist on keeping their prices high, we keep
the embargo going until they do, once Shell drops their
prices Chevron, Mobile and the rest would drop theirs.
We set the price limit, embargo until the price hits ours
and if the price rises above that line, hit them again, they
would soon learn that we can control the price as much
if not more than they do.
EDIT: After further review, maybe this won't work, knowing
BIG OIL, they would work together and the other oil
companies could raise their prices even higher and cause
huge waiting lines. Damn, it sounded so good, guess
they do control the price of gas.

If you believe this I have a bridge to sell you in New York.
Not buying gas for one day does nothing to the gas companies since people will have to buy more on the following day.
If you think gas prices are high in the U.S. look at the gas prices in Europe. Gas prices are high mostly because of taxes not the gas companies which have a very low profit margin.

What will this strategy to not buy gas from Exxon/Mobil do? Not much. It might hurt a bunch of small entrepreneurs who own gas stations. It might hurt the economy even more when they go under. But it won’t change gas prices.

It will do absolutely nothing to not buy gas on the 15th. It's been tried before and proven highly unsuccessful. People will buy it on the 14th or 16th.

One day of not buying gas will not do any good. It will just be bought on the days before or the days after, and the overall affect on gas sales will be NADA.

Urban legend.
What you can do, every day, is to decrease the need for gas. Make sure your tires are properly inflated, don't floor it when you accelerate, combine trips, don't make unnecessary trips, things like that.

Elect a president that does not go around antagonizing every oil producing country in the world, so he can create a shortage here at home and make billions for the oil industry!
