I am 10 weeks and just on Progestrone and Folic acid and methylcobalamine. When to start taking Ironand calcium. I hve seen some women taking from 1st week while some docs ask to start from 12th week. Why so? What other minerals i need..Vitamin B, C, D, A, E ...anything else? All doc prescribe different medicines. So feeling a bit confused. Expecially abt Iron and Calcium.

The reason most people start at 12 weeks is because that is when the doctor firsts sees you in most cases. I started taking calcium supplements right from the beginning any other vitamin I just waited until my doctor prescribed me pre-natal vitamins. I've had 3 kids and they are all heathly.

Iron and Calcium are the 2 most important, if you have problems with your red blood count also known as HELLP syndrome, you may want to take in more vitamin K.

Well, I was shocked to find out that even though I was taking a prenatal, I also need to take a calcium supplement, especially since I'm still breastfeeding and because I'm older (35).

Not sure about specifics, but I know Folic Acid is the most important one.

Here is an article which may help.

I have never heard of a doctor prescribing all different vitamins and minerals separate. There are prenatal vitamins that have everything you need through out your pregnancy, including folic acid and calcium.

Are you in the US? I just have never heard of this... Ask your doctor about the prenatal vitamins. Taking everything separate like that could be dangerous, if you accidentally took too much calcium, for example.

Before you get pregnant. You should consult your obgyn for what you should take before, after you are pregnant you will be prescribed prenatal vitamins. Folic acid is very important. A woman trying to get pregnant should take care of her health BEFORE getting pregnant to increase the chances of having a healthy baby and pregnancy. This includes not drinking, smoking and getting excersize.

Good luck!!

I was always told to start the prenatal vitamins the minute you find out you are pregnant. It's never too early to start folic acid, many women who are TRYING to conceive even take prenatal vitamins.

You should be getting those before you get pregnant and then through out pregnancy, remember if you don't get enough calcium your baby will take yours out of your calcium storage like your bones and teeth, iron is for strong blood if your blood gets too low or too high because of the increse of pregnancy it will deprive your baby of nutrients, make sure you start to take them now!

Stick with a good pre-natal vitamin. Unless your doc tells you otherwise that is the only thing you need. I'm also taking Lipil DHA by Enfamil which you can buy at any drug store, walmart, etc.

You should start taking vitamins before you even start trying. If it was an unexpected pregnancy i would say take them as soon as you find out your pregnant.
