I don't know about lonely, I doubt there is something that can accurately measure a fish's feelings, but there are some species that thrive better in schools of thier own kind then being alone if that helps out.

It depends on the fish. Community fish are named such for a reason. They stress if by themselves. Other fish like goldfish and some cichlids could care less if they have a buddy. And some fish like Oscars and giant gouramis will eat any fish that will fit in their mouth. Good Luck!

try getting a beta aka fighter fish. they are sold by themselves for a reason, and are only a few dollars. but i've never heard of a fish getting lonely or bored. they aren't like dogs or cats, which in my opinion, should have a companion.

it is recommended to have at least four fish. lonliness is one of the key factors in SIFS (self inflicted fish suicide)
