to my baby, my best friends are referred to as "Aunt" Brandi and "Aunt" Nicole b/c they are like sisters to me. it is of course a term of affection. our son has 5 "real" aunts anyway.
the Godmother is totally different. this is who you would choose to raise your child God Forbid anything should happen to you. in our case, the Godparents are my sister-in-law and brother-in-law. (my husband's sister and her husband.)

I think being a godmother is better than an aunt in this situation since u are just a friend, not an actual aunt. A godmother is a lady given the special task of helping the child with the religion their parent(s) picked 4 them. My son has 4 godparents..My cousins and my 2 brothers, so they are uncles and godparents. I will probably call his godmoms auntie bc who would say godmother allie how are u? lol but also if they call u auntie thats special too! I call my cousins bf uncle when referring to him when i speak 2 my son. And i do that bc i consider him part of the family. So either would be good now that i think bout it :-)

I dont know why all these ppl are making a big deal about the aunt having to be related to the baby. If your friend has not asked you to be the godmother then aunt would be a better term to use.

Both are about the same status wise but let your friend decide and don't press her for either. Beside each has a different role in a child's life. Godparents are charged with the child's spiritual upbringing if the parents should not fullfill their roll for whatever reason. Aunt indicates sisterhood with one of the parents.
Frankly I wouldn't worry about it. your friend could go another route and just allow the child to call you by your first name.

I use both. For as long as I can remember my godmother has been my Aunt Linda. I do let people know that she really is my godmother, but I've always called her my aunt. Either way.. I respect her and love her as if she was part of my family anyway. Congrats!

I would say "godmother"! You do not get to chose your family members but a godmother is someone that you trust with your greatest gift. Aunt is easier to say, but I would chose the honor of the chosen title over blood any day.

I wouldn't say godmother unless your friend asked you to be her childs godmother. Going with Aunt would be just fine. Hope this helps!
You could say you were the godmother, but you wouldn't be really unless the mother wanted you to be.

I would go with aunt....if I was really good friends and thought of the other person like a sister. Ask the mom what she would like best.

My friends just had a baby, and I don't want to be called "uncle." I'm not her uncle, so I don't want to use the title. That would be like calling myself "officer" or "professor" or something, without earning or deserving those titles.
On the other hand, "godfather" is a title I could be given officially by the parents. That would be legitimate.
