The first world war. If you look at the policies of the german government under the kaiser(ww1) in hitler you will see very few differences in intent. The intent being expansionism and militarisation of the country. The only real difference is where and to what extent and all of it overshadowed by the nazi doctrine of extermination. If you had of removed the nazi-ism you would see no real difference in intent. You could also say the nullification of the versailles treaty under appeasement governments had a big contribution. If that had of been kept in place, hitler would not have even had a chance to build the army and navy that allowed him to dominate the battlefield. An interesting proposition of mine is was the allied bombing simply a renewal of the versailles treaty?, did the bombing effectively constitute a forced imposition of the versailles treaty ?. I would say pre-war appeasement was the most significant factor of ww2. The treaty was a perfectly valid form of punishment. It was effectively a prison for a very violent offender (germany) until reparations and conditions had been met. Everyone is saying how it was a bad thing actually no ww1 was supported by on every level by the german populace and so these people are as accountable as the soldiers and generals. The great war on the allied side was justified and germany was the unjustified aggressor, The kaiser himself afterwards said " I dreamt I was standing in a room with all of my family (european royalty) and everyone hated me", that is not a verbatim quote so look it up Communism had zero effect on the establishment of ww2 unless you account for the revoltuion/rebellion that happened in russia in ww1 which was not communism as we now define it.
