Do Goldfish Sleep?? Well! Goldfish are diurnal, which means they are active in the day rather than at night - much like humans. Goldfish appear to go into a trance-like state at night, although this is not really sleep, because they don't close their eyelids (beacause Goldfish don't have eyelids! Other than closing their eyes, it does seem just like sleep similar to that humans experience.

If they are floating on top or bottom and are not moving, they are sleeping. Usually, at night they go into a resting state where metabolism slows down and they regenerate much like we do but they do not have eye lids to close. This is why when you turn on a light and they are in this state the kind of freak. Its like someone coming into your room when you are fast asleep blowing a horn and throwing a light switch on.

They don't sleep in the way people or higher animals sleep but they do spend some time in a sleep like state. Be sure they get the chance for this rest by providing adequate time with the lights off, at least 12 hours a day.

No living thing can survive without a "recharge". They slow down, and just float. The other guys are right, fish don't have eyelids, so they appear to be awake, but they aren't.
