Or...will they somehow be responsible for the creation of Jacob or the smoke monster (or is Jacob the smoke monster)?

The Dharma Initiative is NOT meaningless IMO, I have a feeling there is more to them than we think.

Goodspeed is dead, the flashback showed it. But then again ya never know.

To me Jacob looked a LOT like Locke!

Check out this comparison.

To me, it seems that everything on this show has significance. We just have to wait and see what it is. I tend to think Jacob is some sort of higher power. He supposedly wrote the list of people who are good. I also think there is a connection with him to the black smoke. Echo had said that the black smoke comes after those that are evil.

you never know. i saw some still shots of the flash of jacob and he looked like horace goodspeed to me. remember when ben came back to the camp after they had gased it? he went straight to horace and closed his eyes. i think dharma still has something to do with what is going on. i really don't try to theorize anymore as i am usually wrong. i can't wait to find out though.

I no longer care. They've signed on for three more seasons and 48 episodes going until 2010.

Blah, I'm done watching.
