I design my websites with dreamweaver mx and I would like to make the site read only so people can't copy and paste from the site.

Correct, I am looking to disable right clicking - does anyone know what that process is called in Dreamweaver or where I can find the code?

Thanks

I think the way most people do that is to disable right clicking on that webpage, so people can't click to copy the image. Unfortunately, there's a way around it: by going to File and Save Page, anyone can get the source files for everything on the website, including the picture files; but most people don't know that. Also, you might want to chmod the image files so their read permissions are private only (talk to someone who knows about web servers; they should know what chmod is).

You can disable right clicking all you want. There are other ways to get the image.

For example, view source (which is always there because you had to download the webpage anyways). Once you view the source, you go to and copy

whalla! You got the image.

Or you get a program such as Howies Funware, which allows you to take a screenshot of the website, and you can cut the image from the screenshot.

As the first person said, it's the nature of the internet.

if you load it on the interent it's free game so insure you have it watermarked (looks tacky tho) and copyright your image!
you can get a right click disable script just type that in google

you can also go to Myfreecopyright.com it will give you a digital figure print for your image...

as an artist i post a lot of my stuff on my websites I don't use watermarks because they look tacky and honestly most of them i can clean off the water mark nicely!

something that may also help you is to load FLASH as a photo it may only be 1 frame but one can't right click it and save it.. the only way they can get the image is by using the print screen button on your keyboard copy that to any mircrosoft word or powerpoint and crop off what one don't want!
with that being said it don't matter if you use right click or not if i see it i can steal it!

as much effort you put into make it "read only" will keep the humans who don't know much about the interent and graphic away
but it wouldn't stop someone like me!
plus if you look in your temp files you8 will see every image spacer flash document everything but the text is auto stored there so if you return to the page it will be quicker loading because it is coming from your own pc!

well i hope this helped you some.. trust me we all wish there was a way but there isn't!

You can't prevent people from copying anything from your site. By putting it online it is, by very nature of the internet, downloadable and anyone can do whatever they please with it. Every time someone views your site, they have already downloaded every page and every image to their computer.

There are some silly and ultimately pointless tricks to keep very clueless and inept users from doing things like right-clicking on your page, but it won't prevent anyone from taking the content if they want.

This is a fact that every person and company must deal with when deciding to put up a website. There is no way around it - it is part of life.

I think Adobe Photoshop offers a feature called "watermarking" which prevents the page viewer from doing the right-click and "Save as image" business... If I'm not mistaken, this is what was used for some of the images at:
