When I say "I'm sorry your car broke down" I'm saying I feel sorry for you that that happened. I'm not APOLOGIZING. I DIDN'T DO IT! Why do people think I'm apologizing?

Sorry, I have issues this morning.

That is weird. If someone said that to me, I would think just what they said that they were sorry my car broke down.

Sounds like someone else has the issues if they feel the need to scold you for commiserating with them. I get it. You are simply saying... "Hey... it's too bad such a crappy thing had to happen. You are a nice person. You deserve a vehicle that works well."

Sigh. Maybe whoever is scolding you for 'apologizing' is taking out their frustration with the vehicle on you. When people scold me for apologizing I look them square in the eye and say, "I'm sorry, I'll try to stop apologizing" with a very serious look on my face. If they get it, they laugh. If they don't, then I apologize again. Either way, I end up laughing. :)

I say that because I'm sorry that it had to happen.

I'm not actually apologizing since it ain't my problem....I just empathize.

Saying "sorry" does imply fault. It's a legal thing

I don't know, but that happens to me too. I'll say something like "I'm sorry you're sick," and people respond with "it's not your fault." Well, no kidding, I know it's not my fault; I'm just saying I feel bad for you. . .Who knows, when you find the answer, will you pass it on to me?

May be you are too emotional in your expression that they feel you are apologizing rather than sympathizing

They are apologizing for the fact that you are now inconvenienced and they sympathize with your plight
