Just buy a diesel freelander. The conversion and the cost of the diesel engine would not mean it was a cost effective solution. Freelanders are no good no matter if they are petrol or diesel...mate works for land rover and they all call them solihul sheds! Freelanders have always been horrid on the road and even worse off road, forget the hype, buy a jeep cherokee diesel insted, 2.8cdi lump from a mercedes...nice and torquey.

You can't convert the engine from petrol to diesel, General Motors tried that in the seventies with Cadillacs and Chevrolets and they had to admit defeat as the cars just blew up (not literally), so the only thing I can think of is replacing the petrol unit with a diesel one which can't be a problem as they have always made diesel Freelanders.

Yup - remove the petrol engine and replace it with a diesel one.
That is the only way...

I would have thought so, you would need to make a few changes to some parts as you are changing from petrol to diesel. i have seen it done on many defenders. your best bet is to try asking on a landrover forum such as www.landyzone.co.uk
