As far as musical skill, Pink Floyd.

They're all great in their genres, but I'd have to go with Queen and The Who. Brian was creative and innovative in his playing, the entire band wrote great songs (the bassist wrote the biggest hits yet wrote the fewest songs), plus their live shows were a "must see" back in the 70s.
The Who, Moon didn't write songs, Daltrey wrote very little, but Pete wrote some amazing songs, and the band was also amazing live.
PF put on an amazing light show and there's no denying DG is awesome. They were at their best when they were cohesive and weren't playing stadiums. Roger's Wall took them down the wrong path and should've been a solo project.
Metallica are fast and furious and have some great songs but live they've been hit and miss. Hammett and Hetfield awesome, Lars, not so.
