It is highly unlikely you saw an actual queen. More likely a "princess."
Queen ants never leave the nest after they start laying eggs. They are the only fertile female in the nest, and their life is the life of the colony.
If the queen dies without having produced a successor princess (determined by a special diet fed to princess during the larval stage), then the colony will die out in a few weeks. If there is a princess, she will take over the egg-laying tasks asap.

It may not have been a queen ant? It is possible that it was a male ant that had mated and died. They have wings as well.

Also, the queen will be inside the mound and remain very protected. She will not come outside under normal circumstances. It is possible that was a new queen that was searching to mate and then start a new colony. The success rate of those new queens is very low.

The worst that will happen is that queen will never form a colony of her own.

The worker ants probably took the poison into their nest. They are probably congregating in preparation to move to another nest were they will create a new queen.

Another one of the worker ants will become the queen. All of the worker ants in a nest are female so one will just take over. Male ants are the ones you see flying around. But needless to say, you are still going to have ants.

The queen does not leave. If she dies, the other ants will go crazy.

They will have a little ant funeral procession, and afterwards bring the Queen to the little ant cemetery.
I say get a life and stop worrying about the dead queen, and she was probably only a princess.
