If your larger koi that is being chased is noticeably fatter than the others, and is at least 10" long, then it is quite possible that they are spawning. Females are generally fatter and more football-shaped than the males - the males tend to be more torpedo-shaped. However, these differences don't become real noticeable until they are around 10", which is pretty much the smallest possible size at which they spawn. If you see them splashing around alot at the surface and racing around before flipping their tails at or just below the surface of the water, they are almost definitely spawning - especially if it looks like your boys are trying to push your girl right out of the water.

There is no reason to remove the female - the boys will jostle each other around, pushing at her, trying to get her to throw her eggs. When she does, they will release their sperm. The eggs are sticky and will adhere to most anything - the sides of your pond, the roots and leaves of floating plants, etc.

If you want to try and hatch the babies, remove whatever the eggs have stuck onto - there is no snack that koi like to eat more than their own eggs, and they can strip every single one of them off in no time flat. Keep whatever the eggs are on separate from the grown koi until they hatch and are at least 1.5-2" long (as soon as the grown koi can recognize them as fish, they won't eat 'em). The length of time it takes for the eggs to hatch depends on the water temperature.

If your set-up allows for it, you can keep your baby population separate from the parents by building a "gate" out of PVC pipe and screening material and placing it at a narrow part of your pond, with all the eggs/babies on one side, and the big fish on the other, or you can just set up a temporary pond in a kiddie swimming pool - fill with pond water and continue to aerate and filter it, etc., until you are ready to put your babies into the big pond.

If you are NOT going to try hatch the eggs, there is no reason to remove them because the koi will enjoy the snack and can probablyuse the protein. However, you will want to do a pretty substantial partial water change (30%) to get most of the unused sperm out of the water, or you will have a huge ammonia crash.

It is normal for all your fish to be really lethargic and not want to eat much (besides eggs!) for a couple of days after spawning - especially the female. It is hard work for them!!

Hope this helps, and good luck!

in case you do not have already got a pump and skimmer device put in on your pond, you're able to try this till now introducing Koi. including a pump and skimmer device will determine which you hold a sparkling pond on your Koi to stay in. 2 Plan on a million finished grown Koi according to one hundred gallons of water on your pond. to illustrate, in case you have a water backyard pond it is 5'x 20'x 2' on familiar, you might have 2 hundred cubic ft of water. a million cubic foot of water equals approximately 7.5 gallons, so your finished water is close to to a million,500 gallons and can help 15 finished grown Koi. 3 next, you will could come across a source for determining to purchase your Koi. Koi would nicely be somewhat priced and would get very costly, counting on how great they are. uncommon Koi can fee hundreds of dollars. in case you basically choose Koi for the delight in having them, purchase small, somewhat priced fish. They improve somewhat as we talk. in case you have not have been given an area save that sells Koi, they could be offered on line. in case you have buddies that have Koi Ponds, see in the event that they have any that they had choose to sell. Many pond vendors could eliminate Koi at last because of the fact they're going to finally end up with too many for their pond.

Careful who you tell about having Koi fish. They are Illegal in most States. Maine is one of them and that is where I am. I think Mass allows them and not sure what others let people keep them as pets.
