Yeah it was a team effort, but in my humble opinion, the fate of the second world war was decided by the outcome of Operation Barbarossa.....

A decisive role was played by the USSR, USA, and Britain. THE decisive roll was played by the USSR, go ask its 20 million dead.....

Just to give you an idea of battle deaths on both sides check these out:
EASTERN FRONT:
Stalingrad: 1.8 million
Siege of Leningrad: 1.5 million
Moscow 1941-42: 700,000
Smolensk 1941: 500,000
Kiev 1941: 400,000
Vorenesh 1942: 370,000
Belarus 1941: 370,000
2nd Rzhev-Sychevka: 270,000
Caucasus 1942: 260,000
Kursk: 230,000
Lower Dnieper: 170,000
Kongsberg: 170,000
Rostov: 150,000
Budapest: 130,000
and others with less killed

Whereas on the Western Front
Battle of France 180,000
Normandy: 132,000
El Alamein: 70,000
Battle of the Bulge: 38,000

Not even on the same scale....do the math....

It was definitely a collaborative effort. The Russians may have suffered the most casualties, but really it's only because of the tactics they used, not because they won the war for the rest of the world. They had man power to spare and wasted lives in mindless attacks with poorly equipped and untrained troops.

The British fought bravely, but were not able to really stop the Germans themselves. Though they did provide a great deal of materiel aid to Russia.

The USA was the single biggest contributor to the defeat of Nazi Germany. Between the strategic bombing, and the massive materiel they provided to their enemies, they helped win the war in a big way. The Russians received thousands of tanks, planes, locomotives, rail cars and many thousands of trucks from the USA. It's quite unlikely that the Russians would have been able to push back the Germans at all without all the stuff they received from their allies.

I think that the Soviets took the worst of it in WW II in terms of causalities. The common theme among the answers is that Stalin was an ally of Hitler at the beginning of the war. This is not true Stalin signed a "non-aggression" pact with Hitler. He had to do this to allow him time to rebuild his senior office corps. There was a huge political purge in 1937-38 and Stalin had not senior experienced officers.

I think that the Soviets did the bulk of the fighting that defeated Germany's military. However I think the biggest factor in defeating Germany was the fact that North America is geographically separate from Europe which allowed the Allies to build the tools of war without their factories being disrupted by bombs etc. Much of this equipment was shipped to the Soviets.

If you research the results of the war you would find that it was a unified effort to defeat Totalitarianism. But, if I were to choose one side, I would have to give Russia a good percentage of the credit. Soviet Generals Zhukov and Konev racing to see who would get to Berlin first and the T-34 tank leading the way.

One of the biggest differences between the U.S/British forces and Soviet forces was: Soviet Union had no problem sacrificing entire armies to the Germans to accomplish their mission, U.S and Britain could not do that.

I disagree, not that Russia did not suffer horrible losses, they did. Just Stalin and Hitler started the war on the same side so I have little sympathy for Russia.
Without the help of the US, Germany would have one. Period. It was US factories, coal, steel, oil, gold, tanks, planes, wheat, beef, corn, ships, and the citizens that made these things, and the soldiers and sailors that took them across the oceans and feed, supplied and paid for the allied armies that won world war 2.

The Russians bore the brunt of the fighting and paid the heaviest price. Trying to conquer Russia defeated Hitler just like it defeated Napoleon.

No question, the Red Army and the Soviet people. Yes, it was a team effort involving all the allies. Their level of effort tops all others.
