I was raised by a passive/aggressive parent. Every compliment was an insult.

I hate getting insulted & them laughing saying they were joking about it. If it's a joke then why aren't both of us laughing I ask you?

Yes. "You're not ugly!" But I think that also meant that I'm not pretty either, right? or am I just taking things too seriously? you can never trust what anyone says.
